Apprenticeships to the rescue of the High Street

The House of Commons Business, Innovations and Skills select committee have announced that apprenticeships could save the high street. Its report on the retail sector called on employers to be “more ambitious about skills training” with the aim of increasing the number of apprentices at level three and above.

According to the report, the skillset of shop workers needs a boost in order to create a positive in-store customer experience in response to the increasingly competitive marketplace from shopping centres, mail order and supermarkets to name just a few.

The report said: “Apprenticeships are being used more frequently in the retailer sector. They allow retail staff, who often leave school with few qualifications, to gain transferable, interpersonal skills.
