Scottish Wholesale Association Annual Conference

Scotland’s wholesale royalty descended on Perthshire on Friday 13th June for the Scottish Wholesale Association’s (SWA) annual conference. Today’s Group managing director Bill Laird, was one of this year’s keynote speakers along with managing director of Today’s member wholesaler, United Wholesale (Scotland) and current president of the SWA, Asim Sarwar.

  • The importance of technology to the wholesale sector
  • Symbol group benefits
  • Supplier relationships
  • Wholesaler investment
  • Today’s own label success
  • Current trends within the industry

Meanwhile, SWA president Asim Sarwar gave an update on the SWA’s activities during the past 12 months, touching on the high-profile trade association’s first-ever Parliamentary Reception at Holyrood which focused on the escalating economic and community costs of the illicit trade in counterfeit goods.

The conference also enabled wholesalers to explore the many opportunities presented by key events taking place during 2014 – one of Scotland’s most significant years. With the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Homecoming Scotland and, of course, the referendum on independence ensuring that the eyes of the world are on Scotland, the SWA has unveiled an impressive line-up of top-flight speakers who will make presentations around the theme ‘Going for Gold’.

Keynote speakers at this year’s conference from the wholesale industry included John Howie, chairman of CBI Scotland and managing director of Marine Babcock, Marine & Technology Division; and Tamlin Roberts, managing director of Mercurytide, a digital specialist that builds and designs intelligent back office systems, websites and mobile apps as well as creating online marketing and e-commerce solutions.
