Wanis marks 50 years in business with world bazaar themed celebrations!

Todays_image_WanisToday’s member wholesaler Wanis International continued celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a World Bazaar themed extravaganza at Forman’s Fish Island, overlooking London’s Olympic Stadium on Thursday 4th September.

The event, which marks Wanis International’s 50th Anniversary, was in honour of the Wanis’ suppliers, stakeholders and the extended Wanis family, all of whom have helped the business to grow over the past five decades.

The event featured a lavish street-food style menu with cuisines from around the world which reflected the huge range of international ethnic products stocked by Wanis. This bustling international bazaar was brought to life by brought to life by a snake dancer, belly dancers, a magician, limbo dancing, a fire breather, Geishas, and hum-animals.

Sanjay Wadhwani, MD at Wanis said: “From humble beginnings as a small retailer on Holloway Road in London, Wanis has transformed into one of the UK’s largest ethnic food and drinks distributor. We would never have been able to do all this without the support of many people including our suppliers, customers, colleagues and the shoppers who enjoy great tasting foods from around the world. ”

JS_MOR_323Wanis’ reputation was quickly established early in their history, becoming a well-known source of hard to find ethnic products. The demand for these goods initially came from immigrants who missed the taste of home, however the popularity of these products soon grew, resulting in Wanis supplying stores across the UK and exporting their goods to over 20 countries worldwide.

Recognised for their Outstanding Contribution to Wholesale by Today’s in 2014 and their place as a Highly Commended Wholesaler in 2013, Wanis celebrates its 50th Anniversary as a strong business with a fantastic reputation.

MD Sanjay Wadhwani said: “We can’t deny that we have changed over the last 50 years. But what hasn’t changed is that we still have a passion for good food, and we’re still a family business, albeit a much larger family!”

Alongside the celebrations, a silent auction was held as part of the Wanis 50th Anniversary Campaign. Unique items and exclusive foodie experiences were all offered for auction, raising thousands of pounds on the night, with additional donations still being received. The ultimate aim is to raise £50,000 to be shared between five chosen charities, helping people across the UK, India and Jamaica.

The five charities are:

  • The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), UK
  • Guru Nanak Trust Fund, Home for the Disabled, Ranchi, India
  • Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme, London
  • St Anne’s Church, Greenwich Town, Jamaica
  • Waltham Forest Cinema Trust, London
